Lesson learned
If we learn anything from the pandemic, it's that:

1) Workers are always essential.
2) Healthcare is a basic right.
3) Conspiracy theories can be deadly.
4) The stock market isn't the economy.
5) Wages are too low to get by on.
6) Billionaires aren't the answer.

The rich are the root of all evil
We're 2 years into a world-changing pandemic & the US still doesn't have a common sense universal healthcare system. The rich have never cared about the victims of their imperial greed.

I've got our cover story for our latest print issue: I talked to dozens of people who have quit their jobs, in a remarkable moment that's the closest thing to a general strike for the low-wage workforce.https://t.co/zaElQktina

They shall become death

| Red states during the next pandemic |
Last year during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Showtime documentary series Vice featured an episode in which they talked to epidemiologists about the nature of pandemics. I had three takeaways from the show:
- The world was statistically lucky that it went a hundred years in between the 1918 Flu Pandemic and the COVID-19 pandemic without another serious pandemic, considering the growth in globalization.
- As globalization will only grow, the world can expect 3-4 more pandemics between now and the year 2100.
- As horrific as the death toll was for COVID-19, it is nothing compared to the death toll future pandemics could potentially bring--from tens of millions killed to hundreds of millions killed.
I note this because if another pandemic should hit in the near term (say the next ten years or so) it is hard to believe, given the actions of the republican party and governors such as Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott to ignore science and put their fellow Americans at risk in the name of pleasing their dying (in more ways than one) base of voters, that republicans will ever accept masks or shutdowns again.
In so doing, we could literally end up with not just semi-trucks full of dead bodies, but the dead of America lining its streets.
And it should be a wake up call to every sane American under the age of fifty that the republican party is well on its way to becoming a death cult and should be voted out of office at every turn.

Face it: bin Laden won
![]() |
| America is falling, too--it's just taking a little longer |
Boris Johnson, the U.K. Prime Minister, gave a speech this week wherein he claimed that the terrorist attacks in America on 9/11/01 failed to shake our belief in freedom and democracy, and did not divide us. His statement was nothing more than platitudinous bullshit--and especially rich coming from a man whose nation recently decided to disassociate itself from the European union, in large part driven by a right wing that sent their crazy into overdrive beginning on...9/12/01.
Whether or not Osama bin Laden, as he orchestrated the September 11th attacks, foresaw the depths to which the republican party would sink (my guess is--after seeing the circus they made of Bill Clinton's impeachment over an extramarital affair--he knew) is debatable, but his plan to discombobulate America worked to a tee. Make no mistake--bin Laden was not a fool and knew there was no way Al Qaeda could ever come close to destroying America, but that America was perfectly capable of destroying itself.
Witness George W. Bush's foray into Afghanistan, which started as an exercise to capture and kill bin Laden but which became a multitrillion dollar disaster because Bush and his cabal turned it into a failed effort at nation building (the U.K. and Russia's failed efforts in the 20the century should have been a major clue that it was a fool's errand). Republicans used fear of brown people to push through electoral victories in 2002 before embarking on another multitrillion boondoggle in Iraq, and the fissures between Americans at a time when we should have been united began to show. Bush badly mangled the response to Hurricane Katrina (and republicans again showed just how little they cared about anybody who wasn't white), and then obliviously led us into the biggest economic calamity since the Great Depression., both because he was too worried about revenge to worry about other dangers to America.
Every single one of these wounds was self-inflicted by a party hell bent on executing its increasingly misguided worldview regardless of the cost.
Republicans then proceeded to take a bold initiative--healthcare for all Americans which every other democratic nation in the world already had--and turned it into an issue to further divide us and effectively sabotaging anything else President Obama could accomplish that would help the American people. In 2016, republicans gladly accepted help from a nation (Russia) that is our sworn enemy to once again take power, and Donald Trump promptly destroyed the United States standing in the world before so overwhelmingly botching a pandemic that over 650,000 Americans died on his watch, causing more deaths than any war America had ever fought. And most of it because he hoped that people dying in blue states would help lead to his re-election. It did not.
But never fear, unable to win Trump began lying about the outcome of an election he lost handily, and like the dutiful cult they are, republicans across America began to implement voter suppression laws (mostly aimed at people of color) to ensure future victory. And to put the icing on the cake, their supporters are refusing to wear masks and get vaccinated against a deadly mutation of the coronavirus to help protect their fellow Americans, and their leadership is actively sabotaging our economy.
So please tell me again how republicans believe in democracy or in any way want to be united with any American that isn't white or has a different political viewpoint. Johnson's words, like those coming out of any conservative's mouth these days, are utter horseshit.
Yes, Osama bin Laden is dead, but his fellow Muslims believe he's in heaven surrounded by thousands of virgins while republicans are doing their damnedest to turn America into an autocratic theocracy by combining the worst of the Taliban's and Vladimir Putin's fascist playbooks.
Osama bin Laden played republicans for the fools he knew they were, and the rest of America has suffered untold economic and health related harm because he so completely outplayed them.

Donald Trump's only legacy
![]() |
| How many more? |
I have read over the past couple of weeks of republicans either talking about or reminding Donald Trump of his "legacy."
Like Herbert Hoover before him, whose only legacy was his ineptness in handling the Great Depression, the only feat Donald Trump will be remembered for is his epic mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic. This year is literally the deadliest year ever for Americans.
And it's going to stick to him for the rest of his days like stink to shit.

It's the pandemic, stupid
![]() |
| 7.3 million cases and still growing |
Don't get me wrong--I think both Donald Trump's threats to undermine the election and his choice of a radical right wing nominee for the Supreme Court are going to hurt him electorally. But I think both pale in comparison to the damage he has done to Americans with his complete and utter mismanagement of the coronavirus pandemic, which will hurt his re-election chances a lot more.
And I think it wise that we not lose sight of that fact--believe me, no one is happier than the Trump campaign that we're talking about a Supreme Court nominee and Trump's threats about the election instead of 209,000+ dead Americans from his complete and utter incompetence.
The coronavirus pandemic is still affecting each and every Americans everyday lives 24/7. and as long as it does between now and November 3rd it is going to be the biggest issue that leads to Donald Trump's defeat.

My nose
Laura Clawson wrote a piece where she points out that the republican states' refusal of Obamacare's Medicaid provisions is not only a healthcare issue, but it is also a political issue.
It's also a health issue.
From seasonal flu outbreaks to potential pandemics, people who don't have healthcare don't take preventive medical measures because they can't afford them. As everything continues to go more and more global, that means from business travellers to tourists, from truckers to those just passing through, as time goes by when one enters a state that has refused the Medicaid provision one stands a better chance to get sick. And bring that sickness to a cross spectrum of Americans. It's cruel for republicans to show such callous disregard for their own citizen's well-being, but's it's utterly despicable when it's shown for the rest of us.
There's an old saying that says you're free to swing your first anywhere you want--until it hits my nose. Republicans are free to excoriate Obamacare all they want to their base...until it impacts the health of the rest of us.
Peace,

Scenes from an American Trainwreck, Part 4
The 1918 flu pandemic infected 500 million people around the world, and killed 50-100 million people. Twenty-eight percent of the people in the United States were affected by this flu and it killed over 500,000 Americans. Many scientists consider it to be the worst medical disaster in history.
Many of today's scientists think it's only a matter of time before another pandemic of such epic proportions strikes the world again. First the good news: thanks to our wisely spent tax dollars, the National Institute of Health believes we may only be five years from a universal vaccine, which would also work against a massive pandemic. And for the bad news--thanks to the republicans sequester cuts (too many Democrats have been duped by the evil forces of austerity, but let's face it, if we had control of the House, this sequester bullshit would be a long gone mother fucker) that target date will probably be pushed back because of a lack of funding.
Feelin' lucky, punk?
Because that's what republicans are counting on--luck that another widespread pandemic won't occur. So they can continue to throw our tax money to the wealthy, at the expense of the poor and the middle class.
Remember this: if there is another outbreak similar to 1918, it won't be the children of republican senators and congresspeople that will die. It won't be the children of the moneyed elite.
It will be our kids.
