How can a poor man stand such times and live?

I second that emotion...

 Of the many nice consequences of the end of Donald Trump's time in the White House is that I can again begin to focus on issues other than what an inept bozo Trump was and/or the horrific state he left America in with his shit show administration.  Like the greatest long term threat to America's future--income inequality.

Three studies have come to light of late that highlight how the rich keep getting richer and the rest of us keep getting a smaller share of the pie:

• The first shows that millionaires and billionaires own 80% of the wealth in America, up from 60% in 1989.  If this rate continues, they will hold 99% of the wealth in the United States by 2050, leaving the rest of us to eat Soylent Green, one supposes.
• The second notes that there are 644 billionaires in America and that combined they have added an extra $930 billion to their net worth over the last year by cashing in on the pandemic.  That's enough money to give every man, woman, and child in America almost $30,000.  That would be money for people who actually need it to survive, not for those who are on an ego trip to see who can garner the most cookies.
• I was shocked--shocked I tell you--to find there was yet another study (measured over the last fifty years) that proves that tax cuts for the wealthy do not trickle down to the poor and the middle class to either increase their net worth or provide more jobs.  All that tax cuts for the wealthy succeed in doing is making the rich richer and the rest of us live without essential services the government can no longer afford.

"So on we worked, and waited for the light/And went without the meat, and cursed the bread/And Richard Cory, one calm summer night/Went home and"...got in his private jet, flew to his private island, dined on caviar and champagne, partied with movie stars, and the rest of us sucked on it.

At least until we tire of a rigged game--at which point, anything will go.

Solidarity for the middle class

While it's obviously getting a lot of play here in the Motor City, I'd be willing to bet that the rest of the country isn't getting quite the daily onslaught of stories concerning the UAW strike against General Motors--but its influence on the rest of the country could be monumental.

When GM was struggling in 2009, the UAW made huge concessions to help keep the company afloat, but now that GM is swimming in money ($18.1 billion in profits last year) they seem to have developed a case of amnesia when it comes to rewarding their workers.  The UAW rightly seeks its fair share of the company's success, and it is striking to not only help themselves, but to help all of the middle class.

Unions built the middle class, and it is unions that will rebuild it.  Income inequality has become an epidemic and if we don't draw a line in the sand, it will only get worse.  This strike is a step in the right direction to helping us all. 

When I first moved to Detroit, I remember thinking that if it weren't for the UAW and the wages and benefits that it had gotten for its workers, there was no way KMart would have ever paid me a decent wage or given me decent benefits.  Thanks to the UAW I was able to make a decent living.  And it's that way for all of us, not just here in Michigan.

If this strike fails, it's hard to imagine a way back to a vibrant economy that works for all of us, and not just the wealthy, without a lot of ugliness that the powers that be will sorely regret.

Warren-ting a closer look

The woman who would be President?

While it is very early and I haven't chosen a candidate to support for the 2020 Democratic nomination for President, I have to say that Elizabeth Warren thus far has proven herself to be very intriguing and has already laid out clear plans for leading America post-orange shit gibbon (see also, Trump, Donnie).  She is seeking to fortify the financial standing of ordinary Americans, her wealth tax is a shot across the bow against income inequality, she's got strong climate change plans, and when Donald Trump farts, she is immediately letting the country know that it does indeed stink.

And she isn't just feeding us Democratic platitudes--this is a woman with a concrete blueprint to steer America deep into the 21st century.

Over the next several months we're going to be separating the contenders from the pretenders, and Elizabeth Warren is setting herself up quite nicely to a serious contender for the Democratic nomination in 2020.

Me after buying my $1000 car

Donald Trump's chief economic adviser and former Goldman-Sachs president Gary Cohn this week noted that with the extra $1000 a year Americans who make $100,000 a year would be getting from Trump's tax cuts for the wealthy, they could buy a new car.

Who knew there were cars coming out that cost $1000?   Hell, we'll take three--my wife has never driven a new car, I haven't driven one since 2003, and our son will be 16 in a couple of years.  After the trade in for our current cars, we'll end up making money and having no car payments!

What's that?  There aren't new cars that cost a thousand dollars?   Well, shit.

Who could have ever guessed that a rich prick in the Trump administration had no clue about the economic realities facing 90% of Americans?
