A win is a win

 Michelle Obama has famously noted that when republicans go low, Democrats should go high...and it's past time to admit that in our current political climate that is a losing strategy.  I have the utmost respect for the Obamas (and I thoroughly believe Barack Obama will eventually go down in American history as one of the five greatest Presidents ever), but it could be easily argued that President Obama went high in the Supreme Court battle with republicans over the open Supreme Court seat after Antonin Scalia's death...and made a mistake (perhaps colored by believing Hillary Clinton would win the Presidency) that ordinary Americans will still be suffering from a generation from now.  

Tom Sullivan of Digby's Hullabaloo wrote this week (at the risk of losing his progressive credentials) that when it comes to the upcoming midterm elections that if Democrats think they're going to win in 2022 by focusing solely on what they've done for the economy (which will be great) and undoing Donald Trump's executive orders (also great), they are kidding themselves.  He suggested that Democrats should hammer republicans for the insurrection and remind people of exactly what their party attempted to do on January 6th.  I think they should remind voters again and again just what a horrid human being Donald Trump was (there have been a plethora of books recently that have plenty of ammunition) and that republicans have yet to stand up to him.  Republicans should also be excoriated for voting en masse against the Coronavirus Relief Plan, which has helped working class Americans financially more than anything republicans have ever done in our lifetimes.

Sullivan is exactly right--sometimes, you need to punch a redneck.

The personification of a great American

Yes, we did

One of the five greatest Presidents in American history gave his farewell address to us tonight and despite what Commie loving republicans and our incompetent national media would have you believe, our nation has been blessed to have President Obama lead us.  He guided us through one of our nation's darkest hours with as much compassion, grace, wit, intelligence, and class as any human being can possess.  Despite facing unprecedented obstructionism, the continuing stain of racism, and literally billions of dollars spent by the likes of the Koch brother and the DeVos family to defeat his agenda for the real working folks of this country, he succeeded beyond all of our wildest imaginations.  He and Mrs. Obama gave us a first family to be inspired by and aspired to.

I can honestly say that under his Presidency I have never been prouder to be an American and my two votes for him were the two best votes I've ever cast in my thirty-eight years of voting.  We're a better country because of him.

Thank you, Mr. President, and godspeed to you and your family...

Nothing to see here

The first headline I saw on AOL this morning was how Elizabeth Warren had been heckled by the "audience" during her speech last night.  As someone who actually watched her speech (delightful, by the way), I can tell you that the "audience" was a single person, one guy, yelling "Black Lives Matter" again and again.  Good for him--he's allowed and should voice his opinion.  However, to insinuate that somehow Warren was a target of sinister Democratic forces is utter bullshit.

If I had to guess, the piece on AOL was probably written by some corporate toadie.

I had the privilege, thanks to our cable service, of watching the DNC completely devoid of pundits--it's just the stage and shots of the audience.  Let me tell you, all the talk of a divided Democratic Party and disarray on the convention floor is just so much crapola.  The Democrats were energetic, excited, and about as united as I've ever seen us.  Michelle Obama, Cory Booker, and Bernie Sanders made outstanding speeches in support of Hillary Clinton.  It was a terrific first night.

Ignore the hype.  The corporate media is more than happy to put profits over people's lives--the Democratic Party is not.

Some actual good news

From 2012 to 2013, homelessness in America fell by 3.7 percent.

This is really amazing because, as the above link notes, the homeless don't vote, don't donate to political campaigns, and it's not a problem most Americans are concerned about.  But with the likes of new HUD Secreatry Julian Castro, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, and Michelle Obama speaking out about how to end homelessness in America, maybe a change is coming.

And you take your victories where you can get them--especially if you're one of the 600,000 Americans who are homeless on any given night.

You know who the most decent person in America is?

President Obama.

I mean really--how many of us, after four years of the idiot birthers, the dumb ass truthers, the Obama is a socialist morons, the Obama is a fascist numbnuts, the Obama is Hitler dolts, and unprecedented republican obstuctionism, could have stood before the American people today, made our inauguation speech  and not said something like this:

"And to all you haters out there, go fuck yourselves!  I won--enjoy the next four years, asshats!"

You know the best part about Michelle Obama's otherworldly speech tonight?  That we have Bill Clinton giving the nomination speech tomorrow night followed on Thursday by another fellow who's quite good at orating--our President, Barack Obama.  Don't know if it will make a shit's worth of difference on November 6th, but it's going to be a fun week to be a Democrat.

And this from a man who wasn't even going to watch the DNC Convention (what for?  like they're going to say something to make me vote for Romney?).

Keep your fingers crossed for Mrs. Warren tomorrow night....
