Now more than ever, the Fight for $15 is a must

We're getting screwed, blued, and tattooed

If you're not a republican, there's nothing quite like facts to underscore just how badly working-class Americans are getting fucked.  At a time when five oil executives have cashed out their shares to the tune of $99 million and profited from the death and destruction Vladimir Putin has unleased on Ukraine, a new report shows that almost a third of American workers (51.9 million people) make less than $15 an hour.

Now I know that the curtsy queen, Kyrsten Sinema, thinks $15 an hour leads to the lush life, but in the real world it comes to $31,200 a year, IF someone works full-time.  It also leaves workers in fifteen states and the District of Columbia below the federal poverty line, and God only knows how many of us poor bastards are still working for the paltry $7.25 an hour that republicans have decided is good money for an hour's work.

Two more U.S. Senators elected this fall would go a long way toward changing the pitiful state of the minimum wage in America and is just one more reason to vote in full force this November.

Americans Sinking

They'll soon find out it ain't so free

Nancy Pelosi announced last week that if Democrats win back the house in 2018, they will pass a $15 minimum wage within the first 100 hours.  While it's great to see Democrats coming out with a simple, unified platform, the Koch Brothers/DeVos family/Corporate America response to it (via America Rising, another in a long line of self-serving groups for the wealthy elite) was drama queen heaven:

"This is a significant moment since if confirms that the Democrat [sic] party is now in
the hands of extreme liberals who have more in common with European Socialism than
the free enterprise principles that have guided America for generations...."

Fucking seriously?  The only people left in America who still believe in the free enterprise system are the wealthy--because they're the only ones who are getting anything free out of it.  The rest of us are paying out the nose.

Yes, Massah

The ideal workforce, to republicans

In his continuing effort to sell out our institutions and the very souls of America's citizens to Corporate America, Donald Trump has chosen Andrew Puzder, CEO of exquisite cuisine providers Hardee's and Carl's Jr., to be the Secretary of Labor.  For those not familiar, Puzder is a man who:

  • Vehemently opposes the Fight for $15
  • Wants to repeal Obamacare, which is the only way the folks who keep his restaurants in business can afford healthcare
  • Opposes the Obama administrations new overtime rule because in some alternate universe his "managers" would prefer to have a job title rather than the income
  • Oversaw a chain in which 60 percent of their restaurants have been found to be in violation of labor standards
  • Has zero governmental experience
On the bright side, though, we're one step closer to the torches and pitchforks going medieval on the rich folks asses....

And another one...

The Supreme Court last week told Corporate America to go fuck itself--they won't hear the fast food industry's lawsuit against the city of Seattle and it's $15 minimum wage.

In a nutshell, the people voted and the people won.

Republican ideas and policies cannot win at the ballot box--so they've resorted to litigation with stacked courts to screw the American people.

And imagine how much worse it will get for us if Donald Trump gets to appoint the next two or three  Justices to the Supreme Court.

We'll be like a one legged man in an ass kicking contest.

Two down, forty-eight to go

The great state of New York has become the second state to lift its minimum wage to $15--realizing that like California before it, New Yorkers, too, wish to satisfy and keep its greatest resource, namely the citizens of the Empire State.

Once again, it cannot be overstated how important this is as well--now that most of the good factory jobs are gone for good, if we are to have an American economy that works for all of us the big gains in wages are going to have to come from where the bulk of the jobs are going to be:  in the service industry.  And while no one is going to compete with Bill Gates for world's richest human on $15 an hour (it comes to $31,200 per annum for a 40 hour a week position), it is a good start and at least gives American workers a living wage.

Besides, New York and California are striving to hire the best and the brightest--let the other states settle for the densest and dumbest.

Fight for $Survival

A lot of brave folks walked off their jobs again today in their fight for a $15 minimum wage.  While there's still a ways to go, the workers at least have Democrats talking about it and republicans falling all over themselves to explain why it's okay for McDonald's CEO to live high on the hog while his workers can't buy basic necessities (rent, food) even when working 40 hours a week (and good luck to republicans with that one).

But it's not just a fight for minimum wage workers--it's eventually going to be a fight for all of us:

  • Since 1973 our productivity is up but the median wage, in terms of buying power, has fallen $3000 a year.  We're getting a lot more done but we're getting paid less for it...and somebody's getting that money.
  • Between 2000 and 2015, the percentage of corporate income devoted to workers' wages has declined by almost 7%--which means we all have lost $535 billion in wages over the past fifteen years.  Again, somebody's getting that money.
  • Corporate profits since the Great Recession are up 22%, but there are still 5% less jobs than when it started.  Can I get a witness?  Somebody is getting that money.
Eventually we're all going to have to stand up to the degradation of our wages or else in the end "somebody" is going to get their desired endgame and the rest of us will all end up looking a whole hell of a lot like the poor bastards in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle.
