The whites of their eyes

Realizing that their one day strikes weren't enough, fast food workers voted unanimously in Chicago this past weekend to begin using civil disoedience in their quest for $15 an hour and the right to form a union.

This is step number two (though still on a small scale) in working class Americans fight for a living wage and to regain their seat at the table in America's economic well-being amidst our current plutocracy.

Hope it's successfull--because their third step is to go full French Revolution on their asses.

Just give me money

Andy Puzder, CEO of the parent company for Hardee's and Carl Jr.'s fast food restaurants whines in The Wall Street Journal about President Obama's executive action to increase the the number of those eligible for overtime pay, and declares that salaried managers prefer stature to overtime pay.

I have worked in retail for thirty years now, and I can honestly say that Mr. Puzder is completely and totally full of shit.  I don't know of a manager I ever worked with that would take stature over overtime pay, yours truly included.  In fact, if they'd given me overtime pay, they could have given me the title Pinhead In Charge--and I would have laughed all the way to the bank.

Mr. Puzder's claims are the very definition of fucking obtuse.

Sometimes nothing is one cool hand

Fast Food Workers in Detroit today became the fourth group in a major American city (New York, Chicago, and St. Louis were one, two, and three) to strike for a living wage.

I have a friend who has been in retail nearly as long as I have (30 years) and she says that anytime a business she has worked for puts out a charity jar, she could always count on the poor to find a few cents to help out, and the rich to turn their noses in the air.

Leave it to those who have the least and the most to lose to lead the way in fighting for a better economic life for all of us.  Submission to the powers that be can be a pretty bitter taste, especially when you make your living making food for people, and that livelihood is so poor that you can't afford to eat without food stamps.

$15,400 a year (full-time--and good luck with that--at minimum wage) is a slap in the face to hard working people and it seems the time has come for them to slap back.

Good for them.

What more in the name of love

There's a part of me that's a little bothered by the fact that forty-five years after Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot to death in Memphis while there to support striking sanitation workers, that we still have so many people fighting for a decent living wage (sad fact:  7 of the 10 most common jobs in America pay less than $30,000 a year).

But a bigger part of me is quite proud of the fact that we Liberals continue to fight for it despite the odds, and support groups like the fast food workers in New York City who staged a walkout today in their fight for a decent living wage, on the anniversary of King's assassination.  And bemoans the weakened state of unions in America, and the lack of public recognition for all the good they have done for working Americans.

I defy anyone to name anything that the modern incarnation of the republican party has ever done to make life better for average working class Americans.

And by the way, delusions of paranoia don't count.
