What did you do this weekend?

Joe Biden, filling in for the traveling President Obama, used the President's weekly address to America to tout why we should raise the minimum wage.  Dannell Malloy, the Democratic Governor of Connecticut, on Thursday night signed a bill passed by the Democratic controlled legislature to become the first state to increase the minimum wage to $10.10.  Congressional Democrats are working on bringing votes on legislation aimed at increasing the minimum wage, reducing the pay gap between men and women, lowering the interest on college loans, and closing tax loopholes for corporations that do business overseas.  No, they won't pass, but at least we're trying.

Republicans, meanwhile, are spending this weekend kissing the ass of billionaire Sheldon Adelson, who is trying to figure out which one of them, by running for President in 2016, can help him add to his estimated $40 billion dollar net worth, and just for shits and grins, fuck over America's working class to boot.

I know the Democratic Party is a long way from perfect, but anybody who claims there's no difference between our country's two parties is either a scared shitless republican or not paying any attention whatsoever.

All apologists

I wasn't surprised, when reading this piece by Robert Scheer, that American corporations don't pay their taxes.  Pissed off, yes, but surprised, no.  But what is surprising is the number of apologists for worthless U.S. corporations in the comments section.  But when I thought about it, rank and file republicans are a lot like corporations--corporations want our military to protect them, our public schools to educate their workers, our roads to get their workers to and from work, their products across America...but unlike the rest of us, they think they're entitled to these and shouldn't have to pay for it.  Rank and file republicans want Medicare and to collect Social Security, and they, too, make use of our roads and our military...and they, too, want the rest of us (but heaven forbid themselves) to pay for their public services.

Welfare queens, indeed.

You, too, can pay zero in taxes

...if you're a mulinational corporation that makes billions in profit.  As noted in Think Progress, 26 out of 30 major coporations have paid zero in taxes over the last four years.  This despite the fact that your taxes paid for the roads their products traveled on, the police and firemen that protected their plants and office complexes, the military that kept them safe from foreign threats...you get the picture.

I'll be damned if I can figure out, if as Citizen's United declared that corporations are people, why in the hell they don't pay taxes just like ordinary people.  Methinks it's probably the all too often left unsaid truth that in America there are aristocrats who are just a little more special than the little people like you and me.

It's not enough that we're forced to shop at the company store--they want us to run the fucking register and clean the place up, too.

Raising our fists won't be enough

I can't say that news showing that 25 U. S. corporations paid more to their CEOs than they did in taxes is surprising in the least, and while I appreciate it getting the space and outrage it deserved on so many of the sites I read, space and outrage aren't going to end it or put any kind of a dent in it.  And I can guarantee you won't see any complaints from any traditional media outlets.

What to do?  It will be interesting to see what the UAW does in its current contract talks with Ford, as Bob King has mentioned on several occasions that the rank and file are not happy with the $26.5 million bonus Ford CEO Alan Mulally got after the Ford workers granted concessions too numerous to mention to help keep the company afloat--and that they want their share.  The members have authorized a strike, and I hope they keep that threat front and center--one has to doubt that Ford is going to want a strike as their fortunes continue to improve.

As for the rest of us wage slaves...stealth drops in productivity.

Can't hurt.

Here's a thought...

After the two competing plans for how best to cut the U. S. budget deficit have been unveiled in the past couple of weeks (not that I'm convinced this is necessary at this time--I've just become inured to its inevitability), I wonder if anybody will ever take a look at shit like this.  Christ, look at some of the corporate names--and they paid zero in taxes.  How many more are there?  Shouldn't somebody be looking into this and figuring out a way to see that they do pay taxes like the rest of us peons who make a lot less?  I mean, after Citizens United, corporations are people right?  And don't people (e.g., people like me and you) have to pay taxes unless they're certifiably poor?  Do any of these corporations look poor to you?

Just, uh, wondering.
