No, it's Iowa

What the Iowa?

With another upset win this week (Wisconsin) Democratic enthusiasm and confidence continues to grow for the elections this November.  I, however, after the 2016 election fiasco (Hillary was a lock for President, Dems were going to win back the Senate) have pretty much become the Doubting Thomas of Democrats:  I'll believe we're going to win when we actually win the race.  The poll numbers all too often look much better for us than the actual result, and conversely, republican poll numbers seem to look worse than they actually turn out to be.

Still...

After the past couple of elections, I have begun to believe that Iowa, for Democrats, is going the way of Missouri.  Joni Ernst absolutely crushed Bruce Braley in the 2014 Iowa Senate race, we pretty much get our clocks cleaned in three out of the four U.S. Rep races, and Donald Trump won easily over Hillary Clinton--the math just doesn't look good.  We're getting beat and we're getting beat badly.

Cue, however, to this week.  Both of their Senators, Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley, had townhalls in their home state this week...and they both went about as badly as they possibly could--in republican friendly rural areas.  Ernst sounded Palinesque as she tried to explain Trumps racist comments about shithole countries by noting that Norway was close to Russia.  She pretty much got laughed out of the room.  Grassley kept trying to deflect questions about Trump's competency which his constituents were having no part of, and even worse, when asked if he would promise not to cut Social Security or Medicare, Grassley refused.  Can't you just see his next opponent already filming the political ads for that colossal mistake?

Who knows?  Maybe there is something magical in Iowa's cornfields that brings the dead back to life to play ball....

Fuck Donald Trump,

emaycee's believe it or not

So...in the past few days I have gotten e-mails from Mark Pryor, Bruce Braley, and Alison Lundergan Grimes asking me to send money to help Mary Landrieu in her runoff Senate election next month in Louisiana.

Personally, I think Landrieu has as good of a chance at winning this election as I do, and I don't even live in Louisiana (thank God), so it's just pissing good money after bad politics.   But even given that, does she really want three people who lost imminently winnable Senate races by running horrid campaigns to have a voice in her campaign?  Isn't it sort of like someone with perfectly smooth skin asking three lepers to help her keep it that way?

Swear to God, you cannot make this shit up.

Go tell it on the mountain

Frankly, I've often wondered--as pointed out by Charles P. Pierce in this piece-- why Democrats waste their time on run-of-the-mill TV ads when they could do a montage that shows just how fucking nuts republicans are these days.  Screw the stock footage of their families or walking through the park in shirt sleeves or a pair of jeans--let's put Steve King out there talking about the Mexicans with calves like cantaloupes, or Michelle Bachmann telling America how God doesn't like Obamacare, or Sarah Palin pontificating on the greatness of a fascist like Vladimir Putin.  Tell voters "WHEN YOU VOTE FOR REPUBLICANS, THIS IS WHAT YOU'RE VOTING FOR--FUCKING NUTJOBS!"

There is very little the republican party has to offer to 60-70% of the American public and there is nothing wrong with pointing out that in addition to their utter incompetence, they're also off the deepest of deep ends with a lot of misguided hysteria thrown in for extra measure.

It certainly couldn't have hurt Alison Lundergan Grimes in Kentucky or Bruce Braley in Iowa--they're both on the verge of losing very winnable races for the U.S. Senate by using the vanilla pudding strategy of campaign ads.  Their opponents are nuts--point it out for fuck's sake.

Peace.

Thanks republicans!

Thanks to the Antoinettes, in 2010, a year in which Democrats peformed horridly nationwide electorally, we managed to hold on to control of the Senate.

In 2012, a year in which we had to defend twice the seats republicans did, again thanks to the Antoinettes, we still managed to keep control of the Senate.

I keep thinking--especially with the 2014 Senate campaign showing a long row to hoe once again for the Democrats to keep control--that eventually the republicans will wise up and our winning streak will come to a close.

Not so fast bucko....

Seems one Steve King--whackjob extraordinaire--though as yet undeclared, has climbed to the forefront for the republican nomination for the open seat in Iowa in 2014, even though he is already getting his clocked cleaned by the likely Democratic nominee, Bruce Braley.  Rep. Tom Latham yesterday anounced he would not seek the seat, which is bad news for republicans since he actually had a chance to win a seat that could be crucial to their chances of regaining control of the Senate.

It's of little surprise that the republicans are horrible at governing--they can't even run their own fucking party.

And we should be thankful for that every day.
