Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. DLXXIX--Eddie Money: Two Tickets to Paradise

I smoke old stogies I have found, short but not too big around, I'm a man...who's (five days) late again....

After having watched this week's artist on Saturday Night Live, falling in love with his first single, and then rushing out to get his debut LP, I fell in love with his second single simply by listening to it again and again as I listened to the aforementioned album and said first single.  Surprisingly (somewhat), that would pretty much do it--while there was a song or two of his I enjoyed as his career went on, nothing came close to those first two....

I wrote about Eddie Money in Vol. CCLXXXVI (see first single noted above), and on a sadder note, about his death in 2019.  Alas, as his death remains permanent and nothing new of his life or career has surfaced in the last six years, we're going to let that bio ride, captain, ride....

"Two Tickets to Paradise" was the second (and final) single released from his 1977 debut album, the rather deviously entitled Eddie MoneyThe single would reach #22 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100, while, as I noted in my original post of his debut single, the album reached #37 on the Billboard 200.

Fun Fact:  My girlfriend at the time of this week's song's release (who would go on to be my first wife) actually made me two tickets to paradise and sent them to me when she was away at college.  Sadly, they've been lost in time, but it's still a reminder that, despite the eventual outcome of our marriage, we did have a lot of joy together, too.

It's funny to look at some of the critical reviews of Eddie Money (he was pretty much damned with faint praise) as he started his career and think of how much I enjoyed his earliest efforts, listening to his first album again and again on my very first stereo, earned from summers of working for Continental Steel.  In fairness, Money did pretty much turn out to be just another rocker, but I'd bet my next paycheck that a lot more people were saddened at his death than will be saddened at the death of every rock critic ever combined.  What that has to do with this week's song is beyond even me (and I wrote it), but suffice it to say that Money turns in a stellar effort here (some consider it his signature song), nailing the promise and desire of being in love and wanting to give your lover all the joy he or she needs.  There's some great blasting guitar, and the drums really drive the song's ambiance.  No, it isn't one of the greats, but it's still a catchy as all hell love song that rocks and rolls in all the right places.  And sometimes, that's enough.

Lyric Sheet:  "I'm gonna take you on a trip so far from here/I've got two tickets in my pocket, baby/We'll disappear/You know why?/You've waited so long..."

Enjoy:

His ministry was poetry

American heroes

Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated before my political awakening (the 1976 Presidential election for all three of you wondering) so my introduction to the effects of the Civil Rights Movement on the Democratic Party was Jesse Jackson, who passed away today at the age of eighty-four.

Jackson was a protege of King, and throughout his life was a larger-than-life personality who stood for people of color, the poor, the LGBTQ community, and for the better angels of our American experiment.  He was a lifelong critic of the Republican Party and its glorification of greed and utter callousness.  He ran for President in 1984 and 1988 (finishing a respectable third and second respectively), and those efforts in many ways paved the way for Barack Obama to become our President in 2009.  He was a gifted orator whose 1988 speech to the Democratic National Convention had me mesmerized and by its end I had never been prouder of the principles our Democratic Party represented.

Senator Raphael Warnock, in his tribute to Jackon today, said "His ministry was poetry and spiritual power in the public square.  He advanced King's dream and bent the arc of history closer to justice."

Truer words, friends, truer words.

Rest in peace, Mr. Jackson, and send a few more of those better angels our way.  We can surely use them.

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. DLXXVIII--Pachelbel: Canon in D

[Imagine you're listening to Beethoven's Fifth...] Bum, bum, bum, bum, Bum, bum, bum, bum...I'm (only six days?) late again....

My introduction to this week's tune was way back in the day when I was managing my first Camelot Music store in Decatur, Illinois.  There was some sort of Classical Music compilation (couldn't begin to remember the name or music company that made it) that we were encouraged to play and the piece was on it.  Over time it grew on me--it remains the only Classical Music piece that I play regularly, though if I'd had more time through the years, I'm sure there would have been quite a few more....

Johann Pachelbel was born in Nuremberg, Germany in 1653 (thus making him--and the piece he wrote--by far and away the oldest I've written about on Friday Night Jukebox), and showed an early gift for studies and music.  He actually had a full and varied career both as an organist and in writing numerous Classical pieces in numerous styles.  Over the centuries his music went largely forgotten, until the Jean-Francois Paillard chamber orchestra did a recording of his Canon in D in 1968 and it became, for a classical tune, quite the hit.  It's been featured in numerous films (most notably Best Picture winner Ordinary People) and television programs, as well as countless weddings and funerals.  Pachelbel passed away in 1706, so he did not live to see the ubiquity of his piece--unfortunately (or not--he's been dead for over three hundred years, so I doubt he cares), not much else of the dozens of pieces he wrote over the course of his lifetime have attracted much of an audience in light of the success of Canon in D.  Still to have one piece still popular after three hundred years must be at least a taste of immortality.

Fun Fact:  After eighteen years of running a music store, I have a working--albeit small--knowledge of Classical music.  But after doing my half-assed research this week, I realized how truly small it was.  Of the dozens of composers mentioned in Pachelbel's Wikipedia bio, I knew one--Johann Sebastian Bach.  So, if you're wondering where your musical heroes will be three hundred years from now, my guess would be largely forgotten.

Since the phonograph would not be invented until roughly 170 years after his death, there was neither a single nor an album released of Canon in D.  However, the sheer number of Classical artists who have recorded it since its 1968 rediscovery has more than made up for it....

I'm not about to embarrass myself trying to write about a Classical piece (I'll just say it's an absolutely lovely piece featuring violins and a cello).  However, a couple of points:  First, if you listen to it below, be prepared to say "Hey, I know that piece" (or some variant thereof).  As I was playing it before writing this post my partner asked what it was because she'd heard it somewhere before. Second, the fact that it's played at both weddings (beginnings) and funerals (endings) probably tells you all you need to know about its greatness.

Lyric Sheet:  None--it's an instrumental!

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. DLXXVII--Delbert McClinton: Have a Little Faith in Me

It's the end of the world as we know it, it's the end of the world as we know it, it's the end of the world as we know it, and...I'm (eleven days--better than the last one!) late again....

My introduction to this week's tune came via it being played in store back in the day when I was working for Camelot Music.  It was a very popular album among my employees (for some reason blues rock of any sort was huge with any of my associates at every point in my career), but kind of a meh record to me until one day out of the clear blue sky this song came on and captured my musical soul.  No idea why one day it was just some song and the next I loved it, but such is sometimes the case on the musical journey I've taken....

Delbert McClinton has quietly had a long and successful career making music.  Starting out in 1957 playing in a bar band in his native Texas, McClinton had his first taste of success playing harmonica on Bruce Channel's 1962 hit "Hey Baby."  He'd eventually move to L.A. and become part of a duo before embarking on a solo career in 1975 which he continues to this day.  Some of his career highlights include Emmylou Harris taking one of his compositions ("Two More Bottles of Wine") to #1 on the country charts in 1978, a top ten single of his own with "Giving It Up for Your Love" in 1980, a top five country duet with Tanya Tucker ("Tell Me About It") in 1992, and winning four Grammy's (in eight nominations).  For his career, McClinton has released thirty-one albums, twelve compilations, and seventeen singles.  He released his latest album in 2022 and last toured in 2018.

Fun Fact:  While touring the U.K. with Channel in 1962, McClinton met John Lennon and gave him some harmonica tips--which Lennon subsequently used on "Love Me Do" and "Please Please Me."

"Have a Little Faith in Me" was released on McClinton's 1992 album, the rather lacking aurally entitled Never Been Rocked Enough.  The song was not released as a single, but the album hit #118 on the Billboard 200.

Written by John Hiatt (he originally released the song) for his estranged wife after his rehab for drug and alcohol addiction (sadly, she later committed suicide), I chose McClinton's version because it was the version that captured my musical ear (I've heard both and can honestly say that Hiatt's version is great as well).  Opening with a soft rhythmic piano before introducing a swirling organ that provide the backdrop for McClinton's throaty vocals, "Have a Little Faith in Me" becomes a musical redemption for mere mortals such as us.  McClinton's vocals are standout throughout, and the music stays just right, not too heavy nor too soft.  It's easy to see why this song has appeared in so many movies and TV show--it's "I love you and I got your back" genre is perfect for any love crisis scenes.  Almost spiritual, it's a nice ballad that reminds us just how stunning soft musical pieces can be.  A gem.

Lyric Sheet:  "I said I will hold you up, I will hold you up/Your love gives me strength enough/So have a little faith in me..."

The dumpster fire that is Mainstream Media

NBC News's Tom Llamas did an hour-long interview with Trump filled with softballs & filled with Trump lies that he didn't challenge. Worst of all, he did not ask 1 single question to Trump about the Epstein files & the 38,000 references to Trump. Our mainstream media is broken. Subscribe to Zeteo.
