The GOP playbook: The rich get richer...and you get nothing
Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft are all planning huge layoffs. Amazon got $17.5B in federal tax breaks last year. Jeff Bezos is worth $270B. Meta saved $13.7B in taxes. Mark Zuckerberg is worth $210B. Microsoft saved $12.5B last year. Its CEO is worth $1.3B. This is what a rigged economy looks like.

A lesson before sighing
Here is just a short list off the top of my head of leaders and influential people who were (or are) not wealthy who were (or still are) most assuredly great: Martin Luther King, Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Malcolm X, Cesar Chavez, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Rosa Parks, Albert Einstein, Nelson Mandela, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Lech Walesa, Abraham Lincoln, Mother Teresa, Jesus Christ....
While there are a few wealthy folks who have made quite the difference (the Roosevelts, the Kennedys, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Winston Churchill), you'd be hard pressed to name any wealthy folks who in this day and age are little more than greedy pricks trying to stuff their agenda down our throats--Bill Gates, the Koch Brothers, Sheldon Adelson, et al. Not a lot of "greatness" in that bunch, especially when one considers their contribution to the greater good.
In sum, once again Donald Trump has been proven decidedly wrong.
Thus endeth the lesson.

Holy Shit!
In honor of today being World Toilet Day (it's done to call out to the world that over two billion of us do not have sanitary bathrooms) Think Progress ran a piece today highlighting three ways that human poop is being reused. First, we now have a machine that boils poop and then extracts and cleans the water for human use (Bill Gates drank a glass full and said it was yummy, though I have to admit I have my doubts). Second, microbial bugs are being used to extract methane from poop which is in turn being used to generate electrical power (Washington, D.C. and Birmingham, England are already using "poop power"). Third (and probably most sensibly), almost half the poop in the U.S. is now being turned into fertilizer for our crops and soil.
You know, for all the doom and gloom we hear about the future of the planet and of mankind, you have to feel a bit better about us when you hear about such human ingenuity. And I mean this in all sincerity: if we can find uses for our own poop, there is hope for us yet.

Truer words...
In other words, there is nothing that the government can do that Corporate America can't do a lot worse--and make our lives hellish while they're doing it.

Gates of Hell
Anyone who believes corporations will follow through on their end of this bargain should governments give them even more welfare has not been paying much attention to what the Reagan Revolution has wrought for those of us in the working class over the last thirty some odd years.
I've never thought much of Bill Gates--most of his gains have been ill-gotten, his being worth $60 billion dollars hasn't made anyone's life but his own better, and his philanthropic overtures have always struck me as being akin to Michael Corleone trying to buy his salavation through the Church in Godfather III. Though he shares a lot more in common with your average psychopath than he does with most of us, at the very least you would think amassing such a fortune would come with a great deal of shrewdness.
Apparently not.
It takes a special kind of obliviousness (and Gates isn't alone among the 1% for that) to think that legions of people are going to be hunky-dory with minimum wage jobs, substandard healthcare, Potterville Housing, and gruel for three meals a day while Gates and his ilk amass fortunes that stem from their societal worth about as much as a cat fart stems from the antics of the man on the moon.
Gates and others in the 1% who think the path forward is embracing plutocracy are going to find themselves on the losing end of the modern version of the French Revolution.
