Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. DV--The Velvet Underground: Sweet Jane

At least this week's is only six days late, he says sheepishly....

Some years back, I made a playlist of my youngest son's favorite tunes on my iPod, and at some point, I added about fifty to sixty tunes that I consider to be classics that I thought he should have some knowledge of (for the three of you that care, some he liked, some were meh for him).  When the weather is warm, we listen to the playlist while we play catch or shoot some hoops, and a few weeks back this week's tune came on and there was a bridge that I was totally unfamiliar with.  I've heard it numerous times through the years and couldn't believe I'd never noticed it.  Well, after doing my half-assed research, I discovered that the record label cut the bridge for its release as a single, but that on subsequent releases of the song on compilation albums, the Velvet Underground re-added the bridge because it made the song better (it does).  All of which just goes to show...you never know when rock and roll will surprise you yet again....

I wrote about the Velvet Underground in Jukebox, Vol. CLXXVIII, and as the band is still defunct (two deaths, one no longer playing, and the last doing whatever it is musically that pleases him) I'll leave my brief bio right there.  I should note, though, that for this week's featured album Doug Yule replaced John Cale (who left to travel the Avant-Garde Trail).  I also noticed that when I wrote their original post, I didn't link to their all-important discography, which can be found here.  Whew!

"Sweet Jane" was the first single from their penultimate album, the rather heavily entitled, LoadedNeither the single nor the album charted.  However, in another in a long line of examples that prove the maxim "He who laughs last, laughs best," the single is listed at #294 in the most recent Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Songs, and the album ranks at #242 in their latest listing of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Fun Fact:  When recording this week's album, the band was told by its record label that it wanted an album that was "loaded with hits."  Hence the name of this week's featured LP:  Loaded.

"Sweet Jane" is as close to a perfect single as any band could ever hope for.  From its three-chord acoustic guitar (which, ahem, I can play on my guitar, however half-assed) to Lou Reed's animated vocals (dare I say that Lou sounds like he's actually having fun?), from the band's full-throated backing vocals on the chorus (and at the end of many lines) to the "la-la-la's" in the bridge, the song hits every note, every vocal, every instrument with precision. It will forever be a mystery to me how this song is not as well-known as the most iconic rock songs from the seventies--from "Born to Run" to "Dream On," or from "Stairway to Heaven" to "More Than a Feeling," the Velvet Underground created just as big of a masterpiece.  A beautiful single, everything that anyone could hope that rock and roll could ever be.

Lyric Sheet:  "But anyone who ever had a heart/Oh, they wouldn't turn around and break it/And anyone who ever played a part/Oh, they wouldn't turn around and hate it..."

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. DIV--The Strokes: Barely Legal

Yikes--nine ten eleven days late....

One of the many perks of writing a weekly post about my favorite songs is that every now and again I remember one (honestly, this week's tune should have been written about long ago) that for whatever reason I'd not listened to in years.  This week it made me pull out an album I hadn't heard in ages as well, and it was quite the treat to listen once again to one of the best debut albums ever after so many years.  Sometimes, it does seem like you can have too much music....

The Strokes formed in New York City in 1998 (it's five members all come from wealthy families--proof that not all rich people are assholes) and began playing gigs within a year.  In early 2001 they released their debut EP which sparked a bidding war among the major record labels and by the end of the year they had released their debut LP.  It was met with smashing success critically (for the most part), and while the sales weren't otherworldly, they were solid.  The Strokes turned that debut into a twenty-six-year career, and while they have often recorded and toured sporadically, they are still performing together.  They've had a great deal more chart success in the U.K. (all of their albums save one have charted higher in Great Britain, and they've had ten singles hit the singles chart compared to one in the U.S.).  For their career, The Strokes have released six studio albums (five of which reached the top ten here in America), 2 EPs, and 17 singles.  Amazingly, they haven't released a live album--they have developed quite a reputation for the excellence of their live shows.  The band was a major influence on many bands that followed in their wake, including Arctic Monkeys, the Killers, and Franz Ferdinand.

Fun Fact:  Lead singer and songwriter Julian Casablancas credits the Pearl Jam song "Yellow Ledbetter" (Jukebox Vol.CDXXIII) as being the reason he began making music.  Not hard to see why...

"Barely Legal" was the first single from their debut album, the rather nihilistically named Is This It (yes, no question mark).  The song was not released as a single (should have been!), while the album was the worst charting of their career here in the States, peaking at #33.  However, it has had quite the legacy in the succeeding years, ending up at #114 on Rolling Stone's latest ranking of the 500 best albums all-time, and it has shown up on numerous other best of all-time, as well as best of the 2000s, lists.

While the subject matter of "Barely Legal" is a bit on the racy side (the protagonist is wooing a young woman who is just past the age of consent), the song itself is rock solid rock and roll.  The guitar interplay is an electric jolt to the senses, with all the high voltage of a lightning bolt.  In a word:  incredible.  Casablancas vocals catch all the yearning--and doubt--of a man who knows he should know better.  The lyrics are full of tasty tidbits, knowing winks, and even a sanguine f-bomb.  This is the story of a young band making a statement about their talents and their worldview--and succeeding beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Lyric Sheet:  "Oh, you ain't never had nothing I wanted, but/I want it all, I just can't figure out/Nothing..."

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. DIII--Carole King: So Far Away

At least I have a good excuse this week....

I started college in January of 1977 (yes, boys and girls, they had colleges back then), and at roughly the same time I began to explore the still somewhat young history of rock and roll.  Through my oh, so fascinating research, it became evident fairly quickly that the album featuring this week's tune was a watershed moment, and as such, it was one I needed to add to my nascent collection (easily among the first twenty albums I ever bought).  I've always had a soft spot for singer/songwriters, and I'm sure this week's artist, as well as her good friend James Taylor, have an awful lot to do with that love....

Once again, this week I have an artist whose career bio defies being encapsulated into a simple paragraph--but here goes anyway:  Carole King started as a songwriter (with then husband Gerry Goffin) in New York city in the famed Brill Building and wrote a number of classic songs in the early sixties (the songwriting team of King and Goffin have been inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame).  With encouragement from other artists, she eventually started a solo career in 1970, and the next year she released the album that turned her into a superstar.  As is often the case with such huge commercial and critical success, King never repeated her early blockbuster, but nonetheless had a long and varied career including winning four Grammys, numerous world tours (including a quite successful one with James Taylor in 2010), and occasional acting roles.  King has released seventeen studio albums (with three hitting #1), and thirty-three singles (with one of them reaching #1). I would be remiss if I did not note that King is a huge backer of Democratic candidates--in fact, you may have received an e-mail or two from her concerning a local candidate. King was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 2021, and how the ever-living fuck it took so long will be one of the great musical mysteries of all time.

"So Far Away" was the second set (King's first two single releases from the album had A and B side hits) of singles released from her monumentally successful and influential second album, TapestryThe song would reach #14 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100, while the album would be the first #1 LP of her career.

Fun Fact(s):  Tapestry was truly a groundbreaker when it came to album sales.  It spent fifteen consecutive weeks at #1 which is still a record for a female solo artist.  The album remained on the charts for nearly six years, and at 313 weeks, is second only to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (724) for most weeks on the Billboard 200.  It eventually sold over fourteen million copies and was rated at #25 on Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time."

Nothing says how much great music is available quite like the fact that I'm over five hundred songs into Friday Night Jukebox and am just now finally getting to my first Carole King tune (either that or the forgetfulness that comes with aging).  To be honest, I could have chosen any number of songs from the album, but there's something about the intimacy and simplicity of "So Far Away" that has always struck a chord (so to speak) with me.  King's vocals capture perfectly the yearning of being away from the one you love, and the instruments, from King's luscious piano to the subtle bass, from the understated drums to the wistful flute at the end do not miss a single note (so to speak).  An incredible artist at the height of her talents.

Lyric Sheet:  "Long ago I reached for you and there you stood/Holding you again could only do me good/How I wish I could/But you're so far away..."

Enjoy:
