Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. DII--The Temptations: Get Ready

This tardiness will just not do....

While I am certain that I'd heard this week's featured tune numerous times in the past, it was its inclusion in a Motown documentary (Hitsville:  The Making of Motown--well worth the watch) that my youngest son and I watched on Showtime at the height of the pandemic shutdown that made me cock my head and think, "How the hell did I never notice how great this song was?"  As the saying goes, better late than never....

I wrote about The Temptations in Jukebox, Vol. CCCXVIII and as nothing new has happened to the band in the last three and a half years, I'll let that bio stand--other than to note that founding member Otis Williams (the only surviving original member) still takes The Temptations out for a dance move or two on the oldies circuit.

"Get Ready" was the first single released from their 1966 LP, the rather elongated entitled Gettin' ReadyThe single would reach #29 (with a bullet!) on the Billboard Hot 100 (#1 on the R & B singles chart), while the album would peak at #12 on the Billboard 200.

Fun Fact:  The band Rare Earth recorded a twenty-one-minute cover version of "Get Ready" which was edited down to 2:46 for a single released in 1970.  Their version would climb to #4 on the Billboard singles chart--if I had a guess as to why it charted higher than The Temptations version, my guess would be that at the time, rock and roll was still king....

A man is in love, and he's absolutely, positively going to make the girl of his dreams love him, too. Written and produced by Smokey Robinson, "Get Ready" packs as much into two and a half minutes as a music fan could ask for.  From Eddie Kendricks wondrous falsetto to the rest of the band's empowering backing vocals, from the horn section (listen for a wicked, wailing short trumpet solo) to the playful nature of the lyrics, Robinson and the Temptations make musical magic, Motown style.  Another in a long line of songs that makes me go, "Yup, this is why I devoted so much of my life to music."  Just a compelling and stunning effort.

Lyric Sheet:  "So, fee-fi-fo-fum/Look out, baby, 'cause here I come..."

Enjoy:

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. DII--Player: This Time I'm in It for Love

Shitski....

In all honesty, this week's artist is the kind of band that I usually hate--they're that generic rock and roll band that could have been put together with info programmed into a computer.  They had a number one single released before this week's tune that I did not care for at all.  Hell, even the cover of this week's featured album shows four guys trying so hard to look cool that they're anything but. And yet...here they are, having a song inducted into the hallowed halls of Friday Night Jukebox....

Player (formed in 1976 in Los Angeles) had a somewhat odd career--at the height of the band's initial success in late 1978 they had a huge blow up between members after a show in Florida and after some member departures found themselves without a contract. Though they would soldier on with a few remaining members (and managed to release three more LPs), they were finished by 1982.  Think of that--two top ten singles in 1978 and done as a band by 1982!  They would reunite in 1995 (lasted until 2003), and then again in 2007, after which they stayed together until 2018 when another dispute arose.  At present, there are two different incarnations of the band led by two former members.  Through the years over eighteen different musicians have been in Player.  For their career, they released six studio albums (somehow managed two more after their original dissolution), three compilations, and twelve singles (seven of which charted).  As noted above, there are two different versions of Player currently riding the oldies circuit--and with enough success to still make a living as musicians.  Good on them.

Fun Fact:  Founding member Ronn Moss (who leads one of the two current incarnations) went into acting after Player split in 1982 and found quite a bit of success.  He was offered a role on the soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful in 1987 and would go on to play Ridge Forrester for twenty-five years before leaving the show in 2012.  Moss continued to perform with the band through their several reunions.

"This Time I'm in It for Love" was the second single from Player's 1977 debut album, the oh, so ingeniously named PlayerThe single would go on to become their second (and last) top ten single, while the album was the highest charting of their career, reaching #26.

While I noted above that Player was the type of generic band that wasn't my cup of tea, I'd like to note a few things about this week's single.  First, it's a hell of a pop tune.  Second, there's plenty of blue-eyed soul, which, as regular readers (all three of you) will recall, is an absolute emaycee fave. Third, as I listened to "This Time I'm in It for Love" as part of my weekly half-assed research, I could definitely hear some early Hall and Oates vibes--there was some killer white boy soul in Hall and Oates' early years.  And finally, you have to remember this song came out at a time when disco (a genre that could be called the Donald Trump of pop music) overwhelmed the airwaves--anything catchy with a little guitar, drums, and bass was a breath of fresh air.  In the end, it's a delicious slice of pop pie that I have to admit I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this week.  Good pop music, you know, makes the world go 'round....

Lyric Sheet:  "I heard the weatherman/Predict a sunny day/He did not mean to lie/I look outside it's raining anyway/I guess I can live with a rainy day..."

Friday Night Jukebox, Vol. DI--Wilco: What Light

Back to my old ways....

Sometime during the pandemic, my youngest son and I became enamored of a small movie called Bandslam (highly recommend), that featured the story of a group of oddball kids coming together to form a band and compete in a competition (Bandslam) for a chance at a recording contract.  As the credits are running, a song comes on--amazingly enough it's this week's tune--in which the vocals (but not the song) sounded very familiar.  A little Google search and--voila--I came to find out it was a band that I like, from an album that I own, and somehow missed (or forgot about) in my musical adventures.  Whatever gets you there, one supposes....

Wilco formed in 1994, when three of the remaining members of Uncle Tupelo (featured in Jukebox XL and CDLXVIIIdecided to form a new band in the wake of Jay Farrar's departure.  They moved north from my one-time home of Belleville, Illinois (Illinois side of St. Louis) to Chicago, and over the last twenty-eight years have enjoyed both commercial and critical success (as well as neither).  Led by Jeff Tweedy, Wilco has won a Grammy for best alternative album, made Woody Guthrie inspired albums with Billy Bragg (also a Jukebox alumni, Vol. VII --way back in the early days), had numerous tours, and made the rounds of the talk show circuits.  For their career, Wilco has released thirteen studio albums (with four reaching the top ten on the Billboard 200), one live album, six EPs, and twenty-eight singles (with nary a one reaching the charts). Wilco released its latest EP earlier this year.

Fun Fact:  Wilco's fourth album, Yankee Foxtrot Hotel, was not only rejected by their label, Reprise Records, but the band was fired from the label and given the rights to it for free.  It went on to become the bestselling album of Wilco's tenure and is a perfect illustration of how fucked up the music industry has been for too many years to count.

"What Light" was the first single released from their 2007 album, the rather atmospherically named Sky Blue Sky.  The song would go on to be one of their twenty-eight single releases to not hit the Billboard Hot 100, while the album would be the first of their two albums to reach #4.

"What Light" is a simple song with a simple message that says so much more than the sum of its parts.  The message:  let your light shine in whatever you do.  The simplicity of the song is in the band's elegantly quiet instrumentation, Tweedy's understated but heart-rending vocals, and the subtle sparseness of its melody.  In the end, I can't help but think that if a moment of clarity had a theme song, "What Light" is what it would be.

Lyric Sheet:  "And if the whole world's singing your songs/And of your paintings have been hung/Just remember what was your is everyone's from now on..."

Enjoy:
