I'd like to thank...

Thank you, thank you very much

You've got to hand it to Michigan republicans--to have the state Supreme Court announce approximately one month before the election, on a four republicans to three Democrats vote, that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer does not have the power to enact emergency health orders such as mask mandates...has pretty much guaranteed that Democrats will control the state Supreme Court for the first time since the 1990's.

Everything Gov. Whitmer did was for the best of the state.  In March we were third in cases and deaths were soaring.  Thanks to her, we're now 17th in cases and deaths have slowed markedly.  We are beginning to see an uptick in cases--as are most states--so the republican controlled Supreme Court will have blood on its hands, especially for a ruling that legal experts say is nothing short of ludicrous.

I've always thought that businesses are run by the biggest idiots money can buy, and since the case was brought to the courts by business interests it proves my point.  Businesses are not going to rebound until people feel safe about going out, and as long as Michigan is every man for himself when it comes to the coronavirus, businesses will not rebound.

On the bright side, the re-election of Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack and the election of Elizabeth Welch just got a whole lot easier.  Together they can ensure that republicans will not see a majority on our state Supreme Court for a long, long time.

Lions and tigers and perverts, oh my

This is a radio ad, for conservative Michigan State Supreme Court justices Brian Zahra and David Viviano, that Michiganders are being subjected to in the final weeks of the campaign:

“Judges can’t stop sexual predators before they strike. But they can make sure those that get caught pay a heavy price. That’s why Supreme Court Justices Brian Zahra and David Viviano have upheld convictions for sexually abusive criminals. And Viviano and Zahra have made it illegal for sexual predators to use computers to help them commit sexual abuse. Justices Brian Zahra and David Viviano have consistently prioritized the rights of crime victims by upholding tough sentences for violent offenders and sexual abusers. Viviano and Zahra use common sense on Michigan’s Supreme Court. They are rule-of-law judges that apply the law to the facts. They are not influenced by special interests. Supreme Court Justices Brian Zahra and David Viviano use common sense and protect our children and families."

Leaving aside the fact that our State Supreme Court Justices have absolutely nothing to do with the legislation concerning, or the prosecutions of, sexual predators, you're left with the rather repugnant sentiment that somehow Liberal Justices are going to usher in the era of sexual predators in the state of Michigan if Zahra and Viviano aren't elected.

Michiganders aren't that stupid, are they?  Maybe--I know the chamber of commerce and insurance companies sure hope they are.  The republican led Michigan State Supreme Court rivals the Roberts Court when it comes to looking out for Corporate America's bottom line over the needs of working class Americans.

No special interests here...

And the ads they pay for are the equivalent of pointing at the exit and yelling "Stop thief!" in a crowded department store and when everybody looks pocketing the money from the cash register.

Can't Buy Me Love

Unless, of course, you're the Michigan State Supreme Court, the best that corporate money can buy. In yet another defeat for the working people of Michigan, the state Supreme Court sided with the insurance companies (surprise, surprise), and said it was perfectly fine to base car insurance rates on credit score history. So...if you've never had an accident, but accidentally missed a credit card payment...you pay more. As stated by Butch Hollowell, this is about nothing more than insurance industry greed (Michigan insurance companies are the most profitable in the nation--little surprise, as I pay twice here in Detroit what I paid in St. Louis, with the same driving record and an excellent credit history). Why do I note this? It was a Democratic administration that enacted the ban against using credit history in an effort to save consumers money. It was the three justices elected byDemocrats who dissented because the evidence that credit history reflects on insurance claims was inconslusive. And the people of Michigan want to put the Republicans back in charge? Good fucking luck with that--you're just screwing yourselves and giving corporations even more control over your lives and your bank account. And for those suggesting the way to lower insurance premiums for Michigan residents would be to lower the amount of personal injury coverage--are you people out of your fucking minds? As healthcare costs continue to skyrocket it would be a good idea to decrease coverage? And anybody who thinks we'd see rate decreases is either incredibly naive or incredibly stupid. All that would happen is Michigan insurers would get even more profitable at our expense. Shout Out to the Tea Party: Here's your voice of reason, the Detroit News, fully supportive of corporations gouging you to pad their profits. Free market my ass--it's the rich looking out for the rich.... Peace, emaycee
