Help yourself

How much longer before we retaliate?

Thanks to Mitch McConnell's stealing of a Supreme Court seat, once again the working men and women of American will be worse off financially thanks to the Supreme Court's recent decision in Epic Systems v. Lewis, which, through endorsing forced arbitration, essentially legalizes wage theft.  While the decision was made by the Supreme Court, make no mistake--this is for all intents and purposes, a law created and enforced by the republican party.

But fear not, fellow workers of the world.  We do have recourse--as long as you're willing to take matters into your own hands (so to speak...).

Just guessing, but a $50 billion (estimate of how much is stolen via wage theft from American workers each year) hit to Corporate America's bottom line would certainly be a fine fuck you to the thieves who run our companies.

And don't forget the interest....

All the small things

He's actually nicer than your average republican...

It really isn't a small thing, but once again republicans have voted for Big Business and it will cost average Americans dearly.  In the dead of night on Tuesday, republicans repealed a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau rule that made it easier for the little guy to sue banks (via class action lawsuits) and prevented banks and financial institutions from making their customers accept forced arbitration clauses, which means...if Wells-Fargo opens fake accounts in your name unless you have the wherewithal to afford a lawyer on your own (not most of us) that can compete with a multinational corporation's massive legal department, you're fucked.  Or if Equifax manages to get hacked and gives away all of your personal information, and they want to take you to binding arbitration...you're fucked.

"Christian" Mike Pence cast the deciding vote that made it much easier for banks to screw Americans--if there's a special place in hell for Christians who are anything but, Pence will be the first one admitted.

This is another in a long line of republican actions that don't get much press coverage, like their passage of right to work for less laws in numerous states, which show their true loyalty to an unfettered capitalism which results in all of us having less legal recourse against Corporate America and and a lot less money in our pockets.

By the way, thanks to republicans, credit union here I come!

A little good news

Regular readers will know that I'm not a big fan of forced abritration--clauses that require both workers and consumers to go to arbitration to settle disputes with employers and companies we do business with, rather than file class action lawsuits.  It's a rigged game and corporations do much better than the little guys under arbitration .

Well, this week the Seventh Circuit ruled that employees can sue their employers in class action lawsuits, even if said employers forced their employees to to sign away such a right.

Somebody done fucked up--the little guys won....

While the ruling is certain to be subject to appeals, with the Supreme Court currently at a 4-4 split (if tied the ruling automatically defers to the lower court outcome) and more than likely a Democrat will be nominating that all important fifth vote, it might be just another nail in the coffin of forced arbitration.

And with the CFPB working diligently to end all consumer forced arbitration, we could soon be saying buh-bye to a heinous business practice.

Peace,
