Democrat good, republican bad

News that 252,000 jobs were created in December and that the unemployment rate fell to 5.6% was tempered somewhat by wages falling five cents for the month.

This is a good time to absolutely hammer republicans on the minimum wage.  While they fiddle-fart around with whatever their hokum issue of the day is and refuse to work for a bump in the woefully inadequate federal minimum wage, we should be reminding Americans every day that we're the ones who want to pump billions into the American economy, and republicans are the ones who are causing wages to stagnate.

Democrats create jobs; republicans kill wages--it's as simple as that.

A pocket full of mumbles

It's been a while since I wrote one of those depressing posts with the really shitty economic data for working folks...so I figured, it's a gloomy Sunday night, what the fuck, why not tonight?

• Three in four--that's 75% for you republican geniuses--are now living paycheck to paycheck.  If republicans have their way, they'll pass the Ryan budget and make it nine out of ten (90%, same audience).
• From the same link, CEOs now make 273 dollars for every dollar we peons make.  Anybody ever known (anyone with a brain, that is) a CEO whose worth to the company you work for was 273 times your worth?  Didn't think so...
• The first quarter of this year saw the largest wage drop--3.8%--since the government began keeping track of wage increases/decreases 65 years ago.  It won't be long before my (still non-existent) grandkids will be asking me, "Hey, Grandpa, tell us about the days when people used to get raises...."
• A recent CBO report shows that 50% of our tax expenditures go to the top 20% of earners in the U.S., while the bottom 20% (you know, welfare cheats and lazy, no-good-for-nothings) get a mere 8%.  While I'm at it, I can teach my grandchildren how to light torches and carry pitchforks.
• It could be worse for you--you could be a temp worker (unless, of course, you already are).  Back in the day, I believe they called it indentured servitude.  Today, we call it Kelly Services.
• As if it isn't bad enough at one in six Americans in the richest nation in the history of humankind living in poverty, the Census Bureau believes its numbers actually underrepresent the number of poor Americans, and some believe it could be as high as 50%.  I'm not sure there are any words....

Such are the promises of what we used to call the American dream.

That deadbeat 1%

While corporate profits are skyrocketing, corporate taxes are plummeting to all time lows (less than 10% of federal tax revenues).  The effective tax rate on corporations now stands at a little over twelve percent--considerably less, percentagewise, than most of us pay.

While corporations were reaping $824 billion in profits last year, the working men and women of America saw their wages fall to an all-time low, 43.5 percent of GDP (historically it's been over 50%).

Explain to me please, why a) we continue to subsidize corporations, and b) we need to cut the social safety net?  In a better world, the only matter we'd be discussing in the fiscal curb negotiations is how much more American corporations are going to pay.

We ought to just be called the United Corporations of America.

Tea Party=R.I.P. America

"In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." George Orwell I always get a kick out of conservatives who claim that a spokesperson (Beck, Coulter, Limbaugh, ad nauseum) speaks the "truth." I hear this said, I see it in letters to the editor. And that's why we liberals hate them. In a word: No. What they're really doing is lying, and it just happens to be a lie you agree with. That's fine--you want to live in "I'm Forty-Two Years Old, Flipping Burgers For A Living, Still Living With My Mom, But I Could Get A Date With Salma Hayek If I Could Only Get Her Phone Number Land" that's your business. What really pisses me off is that the mainstream media gives these people credence. Like they're something more than what they are, which is a superlatively small fringe movement. To wit: In a year-end recap, Chris Matthews ranked the Tea Party movement as one of the top ten political stories of the past decade. Please--they have accomplished absolutely nothing--nothing--of importance. Or this: when our less than beloved Governor Granholm gave her final State of the State Address this past month, four hundred Tea Party members showed up to protest. Out of 11 million people who call our great state home, an entire four hundred showed up to protest, and The Detroit Free Press thought this was worthy of an article. For fuck's sake, fifty of us showed up to watch our kids take their Tae Kwan Do testing last week--does that make us a movement, too? Can anyone other than Olbermann and Maddow get this right? The Tea Party movement is bankrolled by corporations and the wealthy who are seeking to ensure that the wealthy get wealthier, and the rest of us get as little as possible. The best of all possible worlds for these people would be a government without power, controlled entirely by corporations and the wealthy, so that we, the people, would be completely powerless, without any means of protection. Free Market, my ass--what these people want is a return to serfdom. They want peons and lords--99% of us will be the peons (shopping at the company store, living in company homes, treated by company doctors). Think I'm full of shit? Check out your wages versus inflation over the last ten years. How much your health benefits have risen. How little autonomy you have in your job any more. How your CEO's pay has risen exponentially compared to yours. How the wealth of the wealthiest 10% has risen compared to the other 90% of the country. More of the same in the years to come? Then the Tea Party is for you. You want the "truth?" Here it is: your "movement" is a movement for corporations and the wealthy, who have as much respect for you and your family, are as concerned about your family's needs, as was Marie Antoinette for her loyal subjects. Good luck with that. Me, I'm going to keep fighting the liberal fight. We deserve it. Peace, emaycee
