Tacky and pointless

What a weekend of contrasts! SATURDAY NIGHT: One of the most celebrated and joyful evenings in sports ever. SUNDAY NIGHT: One of the most tacky and pointless evenings in sports ever.

The monster's disciples

Trump's followers

In no way do I think the following incidents occurred in a vacuum:
  • Washington Wizards star Russell Westbrook had popcorn thrown at him by a fan during last Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia 76ers.
  • Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young was spit at by a fan, also last Wednesday, during his team's game with the New York Knicks.
  • Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant's family was accosted (allegedly of a racist nature) by three fans during their game with the Utah Jazz, again last Wednesday.
  • Just to prove there wasn't something in the air just last Wednesday, on Sunday Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving had a bottle thrown at him by a fan.
Anyone who thinks it is coincidence that all four athletes were black is living in an alternate universe.  And anyone who doesn't think four years of Donald Trump's grievance politics didn't lead to these incidents is kidding themselves.  His followers can't accept the fact that Trump lost in a landslide and are willing to destroy our country to get what isn't rightfully theirs--does anyone think these buffoons are going to accept the fact that great players make great plays that beat their favorite team?  Or that sometimes your favorite team just isn't as good as the team you lose to?  Add in the fact that professional basketball players (in both the NBA and WNBA) have been very vocal in their support for groups like Black Lives Matter and the Democratic Party and I will goddamn guarantee you that all four of those incidents had their genesis in the ravings of the Cheeto Colossus, Donald Trump.

And with each passing day I wonder more and more just how fucked the future of America is.

Ain't no sunshine state

Two tickets to heaven, please

I have no qualms with the NBA holding out hope to still crown a champion this season--it's a business that like all others needs to make money and to be honest, it would be a shot in the arm to a lot of us who are missing sports like crazy.  But for them to be considering Disney World in Florida as one of the two spots to continue the season absolutely reeks of desperation.

While the NBA very well may be able to test its players, the state of Florida (and America as a whole) is not equipped to test as many people as will need to be tested--even if they quarantine the players regular folks are going to have to have access to feed them, clean their uniforms, etc....not to mention that since Florida is not reporting its deaths honestly, we actually have no idea how bad the situation really is in Florida.  Do NBA owners really want to trust a Trump sycophant, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, to be truthful with the lives of their million dollar assets?

No, the reason Florida is on the list is because DeSantis has made sports an essential business in Florida and not many other of the states where such an event might be held are going to insult the intelligence of their citizens by making sports an essential activity.

If the NBA is stupid enough to put their players in jeopardy in Florida, it's going to be a disaster of their own making.

A true legacy

There are millions of sports fans across the world who celebrated the retirement of Kobe Bryant yesterday.

I wasn't one of them--mostly because I'm not a big fan of rapists.

I can't say I was particularly surprised that the traditional media managed to spend an entire season lionizing Bryant without mentioning his greatest legacy in America:  turning the act of slut shaming into an art.  In the process womens' lives are ruined and sports stars go on being superstars making their millions instead of being sent to prison where they belong.  Thanks to Bryant, Steelers' quarterback Ben Roethlisberger got away with sexually assaulting two women, Blackhawks' forward Patrick Kane got away with one, and no one's really sure how many former Florida State, and now Tampa Bay Buccaneer quarterback, Jameis Winston got away with.

Fortunately, there is still a thriving alternative media and Think Progress yesterday called into question all of the hoopla surrounding Bryant's last days in the NBA--calling out the ignorant idolatry while a guilty man goes free just because he has lots of money (well worth the read).

For those who think the women involved in these cases were merely gold diggers, I highly suggest reading the Think Progress piece--to a person, each of these women's lives were ruined and some even had to go into hiding.  They are not victims once, but victims again and again because rich men can afford lawyers that get paid to destroy their reputations, lives, and families to protect sexual deviants.

As noted at the end of the article, it's highly likely that had Kobe Bryant been Kobe Bryant, janitor, or Kobe Bryant, shoe store manager, he'd be in prison.

And for those who still choose to celebrate his accomplishments, I ask you this:  would you be comfortable having your wife, your mother, your sister, or your daughter in a room alone with Kobe Bryant (or Roethlisberger or Kane or Winston)?

I know I sure wouldn't.
