Evidently he was persuaded by the opportunity to profit, and launched $TRUMP days before his inauguration. The value skyrocketed and then plummeted, causing investors to lose billions.

Corporate fail, ad infinitum

Like many states, the state of Michigan has turned its prison food distribution over to a private company, in our case, Aramark Corrections.  In what I'm sure comes as a great shock, Aramark has poved grossly inept in its handling of the food distribution for Michigan's prison population.

One thing it illustrates for certain, though, is that if you want to guarantee that American taxpayers pay more for worse service, you'll turn public run systems over to the private sector.

There's absolutely nothing these folks can't fuck up ten times better than our average citizens.

Scenes from an American trainwreck, Part 1

I've been reading a lot of depressing stories lately (thanks Alternet!)--time to share the sorrow....

What is it with republicans that whenever something goes wrong with a business or a municipality, they always blame the working men and women (usually over how much money we make--even though more often than not it's an extremely modest income)?  Seriously--we follow orders from our leadership, we follow their plans and outlines, but in the end, it's our fault?  What the fuck, right?

And if we are incompetent, or hurt sales, or make a major mistake, we get fired, and more often than not, since it was our own fault, we can't even collect unemployment.  It's either find a new job pronto, or starve.

Compare and contrast, however, with American CEOs--they run corporations into the ground with piss poor strategies, reduce earnings and profitability, watch sales decline, all with the business acumen of an armadillo...and they get a golden parachute worth unfathomable amounts of money and job offers out the watoozi for even more money.  And their employees end up with pink slips or are asked to forgo raises, or worse take a pay cut, all because of their leadership's utter incompetence. 

If we lived in a truly capitalistic society, these CEOS would get the same treatment we get when we can't do the job--a boot in the ass propelling us out the front door.

The only thing free about the free market in America is the free ride CEOs get.

Give me one reason

I could give you dozens of reasons not to vote for Mitt Romney from the inane (what the fuck kind of name is Mitt?  sounds like the name of some guy in a private club who knows all the words to the "Whiffenpoof Song") to the deadly serious (income inequality is bound to increase under Romney and will almost certainlly lead to the second American Revolution, this one with echoes closer to the French Revolution than our own).  But one of the ones that scares me the most is this--Romney promises to stack his Cabinet with people from the private sector.

Because what the American people really need is the incompetent boobs who destroyed our economy getting a crack at destroying our nation, too.  I think we've all seen enough of their "real world" experience.

All the CEO's Men

There's a great line in All the President's Men where Deep Throat tells Bob Woodward (concerning the Nixon administration), that "These guys really aren't that bright." It was a hard lesson that the American people learned during the seventies--our government's leaders weren't necessarily the best and the brightest, and since we've held a good deal of skepticism towards our nation's leaders. Can we finally do the same for our corporate leaders? After the auto industry disaster, the Wall Street disaster, the BP disaster, Enron, ad nauseum, can we finally admit that corporate leaders really aren't that bright, really aren't that good at what they do, and are not the best and the brightest we have?
